I always intended this site to be a central point of contact for Instructors - especially Watford Communty Instructors. When I set up my Community classes in 2005, I felt there should be a place where you can advertise your classes and communicate with other Instructors for support and maybe even to share choreography or discuss the latest Industry trends Jenny T.
You must get appropriate Insurance to teach your classes. You can get this directly from the Register of Exercise Professionals in conjunction with your REPS Membership. These combined cost approximately £70(depending on level of cover) but seperately you can get insurance from approximately £40 a year and REPS membership from approximately £30. You may need to consider special insurance for special populations.
You should register with the Register of Exercise Professionals to gain professional recognition of your qualifications. By joining this register you are commiting to gain CPD points yearly. There are costs to be considered annually for this.
You must renew your First Aid Certificate(minimum appointed persons CPR) 3 yearly.
You need to decide whether you will use PPL or Non PPL Licenced Music - there are costs to both of these options. A PPL license can be approximately £80 and subsequent CDs can be £22 but usually music companies do combination deals which tie in PPL and a certain number of CDs.
Advertise & Market your business - website, business cards, fliers etc etc
Have a CV ready and have all your certificates close to hand. Most employers will ask to take copies of these.
Consider tax implications - you may need to register as Self Employed even if second job.
Consider branching out/diversifying your teaching portfolio and doing training courses in new areas - you have to do CPD anyway, but also these keep you fresh and give you a chance to chat to other instructors. It can get quite lonely as a Freelancer!!
Get mobile numbers of colleagues - you never know when you may need cover.
